Call for Watermen / Women Photos and Stories

The museum is trying to establish a comprehensive database of our residents who worked the waters, from as far back as we are able to gather data. We ask that you delve into your family history for names – past and present – and photographs as well as stories, which we will insert into our database and publish online. Please submit your materials electronically, if possible, in the suggested format:

  •  Contact Information (Name, Phone Number, Address, Email)

  •  Name of person(s) to be included in database

  •  Type of work (crabbing, oystering, lighthouse, etc.), a description of the work, stories about their life, places travelled and any additional information you wish to share.

  • If you wish to be photographed or participate in an interview and are able to provide names of our county’s watermen / women, contact us at mathewsvamuseum@gmail.com.
Mathews Historical Museum's major yearly fundraising event is May Faire held the first Saturday in May. The event celebrates Mathews County's past with a different history theme each year. A highlight of the event is the May Pole Dance and the recognition of past May Queens. There are activities and fun for the whole family. Come celebrate!
