Mathews Maritime Foundation and Museum

The mission of the Mathews Maritime Foundation is to preserve, present, and participate in the rich maritime and cultural heritage of Mathews County, Virginia. The foundation is dedicated to preserving this rich heritage through research, documentation, conservation, and education. Incorporated on January 6, 1999, it has 2 locations, the Mathews Maritime Museum and the Gwynn’s Island Boat Shop, and continues to expand its presence in the county.

Gwynn's Island Museum

The mission of the Gwynn's Island Museum is to preserve the history of Mathews County and Gwynn's Island and to remember all the men and women who have served our country. Admission to the museum is free and it is open from 1-5 p.m. Fridays through Sundays, April through October. Call 804-725-5022 for special openings for large groups.

Mathews County Historical Society

The Mathews County Historical Society, Inc. was established in 1964 and incorporated in 1970 to preserve, study, and promote the unique heritage of Mathews County, Virginia. Since then, the society has grown from its original 26 members to over 150 members who reside in the county and throughout the United States.
